Trichoglottis smithii is found in Borneo and Sumatra. It is one of about 60 species in the genus trichoglottis which is distributed in East Asia, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, the Philippines and Polynesia . The name of the genus refers to its hairy lip. This one has a small flower of about 2.65 cm (1.1 inch) across.

Smith's trichoglottis {Trichoglottis smithii}

Smith's trichoglottis {Trichoglottis smithii}.

This wild orchid is found in the open forests of Borneo and Sumatra at elevations of up to 1300 meters (4,265 feet). It thrives in warm to hot conditions. It is a small to medium sized epiphyte with a stem carrying leaves which bloom in the spring and fall. The inflorescence have one or two small flowers of about 2.65 cm (1.1 inch) across. The flowers are fragrant.
