the nun's orchid {phaius tankervilleae}

Phais tankervilleae (Nun's Orchid) photographed at Kipandi Butterfly Park.

This is a large orchid found in Australia, the Pacific Islands, Malaysia, Indonesia, and southern China at elevations up to 1,300 meters. It grows from the ground (terrestrial) with an inflorescence of about 4 feet long and bears flowers of about 4.5 inches across.
