The Fragrant Aerides {aerides odorata}

The Fragrant Aerides is widespread in lowland forests of Himalayas, Assam, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Andaman Islands, Myanamar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and the Philippines at elevations of 200 to 2,000 meters.

It is a large to giant sized, highly variable and hot to cool growing epiphyte. It grows high in the trees. The inflorescence is about 60 cm long and bears up to 30 flowers which bloom from late spring through fall. The waxy flowers are 2.5 to 4.4 cm across and are very, very fragrant. I can’t describe the smell but it is like perfume.
