The Giant Plocoglottis {plocoglottis plicata}

This is a terrestrial orchid found in Sabah, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Moluccas and the Philippines, in lowland forests at elevations up to 1,200 metres (3,937 feet). The inflorescence is about 50 cm (18 inches) long and bears a few small flowers which are 1.2 to 1.7 cm (1/2 to 3/4 inch) across. Quite a contradiction to its common name.

Photographed at Orchid de Villa, a private orchid farm about 20 km from Kota Kinabalu. This farm covers about 11 acres of lowland forest. The terrain is undulating with a height of about 100 metres at the peak.  4 acres of flat land forms the hybrid orchid nursery, while the balance 7 acres is forest. The wild orchids are found in-situ, growing on the forest grounds and tree trunks.

It took me 3.5 hours to walk almost the whole area, and there was not enough time to carefully photograph the orchids. Furthermore, in the haste, I had forgotten to reset the ISO 2000 on my camera, from the previous night out. I found out after the 3.5-hour walk. LOL!
